RICHMOND, VIRGINIA--Phyllis C. Katz, a shareholder in the law firm of Sands Anderson Marks & Miller, PC, will be inducted as a Fellow of the Virginia Law Foundation (VLF) at the Virginia Bar Association meeting on January 22, 2009, in Williamsburg, firm president M. Pierce Rucker announced today."We are immensely proud of Phyllis's tireless work on behalf of the citizens of the Commonwealth, expanding their access to legal services and giving her time and energy to those who might not otherwise be able to afford representation," Rucker said in his announcement.
Katz was the 2008 recipient of the Lewis B. Powell, Jr. Pro Bono Award from the Virginia State Bar, its top recognition for the donation of legal services to the underserved. The Virginia Law Foundation will induct 17 Virginia lawyers its 2009 Class of Fellows at a dinner meeting where Dr. Edward L. Ayers, President of the University of Richmond, will be the speaker.
According to the Foundation, induction as a Fellow is a special honor conferred by the VLF Board on selected Virginia attorneys, law professors, and retired members of the judiciary who are deemed to be outstanding in their profession and in their community.
Katz practices employment and municipal law at the Richmond office of the law firm. in the 1990s, she helped form the Legal Information Network for Cancer (LINC), a Virginia organization that matches cancer patients and their families with no-cost legal advisors who can assess legal issues and help with the ones that may be present in treatment, survival and insurance coverage.
