Tom Bowden Chairs Richmond Mayor’s Bike Month Program

Thomas L. Bowden, Sr., a venture finance lawyer at Sands Anderson PC and an avid bicyclist, has been appointed Chair of the Bike to Work Week subcommittee of the City of Richmond Mayor's Pedestrian, Bicycles and Trails Planning Commission, firm President M. Pierce Rucker announced today.

"I am excited to serve on this effort to publicize and popularize local efforts to cycle to work, which are even more economically beneficial in these days of high gasoline prices and environmental sensitivity," said Bowden.

Bowden has been promoting bicycling to work for years, and recently was interviewed both by the Richmond Times Dispatch (April 17, 2001, "Virginia Goes Green") and Virginia Business magazine (March 28, 2011, "Eco-savvy efforts challenge Richmond's button-down image") for his activity and insight. He is a writer for the Commute By Bike blog and started the Virginia Bike Commuters group on LinkedIn.com. Bowden is also Co-founder; Advisory Group member and General Counsel of Cycor Sports and serves on the BikeWalk Virginia Board of Directors.

Now coordinated by the League of American Bicyclists, National Bike Month (May) has been celebrated for fifty-five years. Originally the Cycle Trade Association called the month American Bike Month but in the 1980s it evolved to Bike Month. Along with the name change, Bike Month became more about promoting cycling and safe bicycling, not just selling bicycles. Bike to Work Day (May 20) is one of the many promotional efforts for May.
